Minor deviations can occur in the alignment of your teeth from a wide range of sources. This could be the result of a missing tooth, an uncorrected alignment problem from childhood, or natural changes in the structure of your jaw.
Once your teeth have been corrected by traditional braces or a brand clear plastic braces like Invisalign® you can enjoy a more appealing smile and a better functioning mouth. However, this is not the end of the realignment process. There will still be some tension lingering in the periodontal ligaments that anchor your teeth in the sockets. If it’s not mitigated in some way the tension could cause your teeth to relapse out of alignment.
To prevent this from happening, Dr. Chris Trockel might be able to fit you for a clear plastic retainer at their orthodontic clinic. This simple mouthpiece is made from a clear plastic material, similar to Invisalign® aligner trays. You will need to use the retainer at the necessary times. The total duration of your retention phase will likely be the same as the time it took to correct your smile with braces.
You can drink normally while you have the retainer in your mouth. However, you will need to take it out to prevent damage when eating. Any time you remove it, you should keep the clear plastic retainer in the case provided. Improving a case with a plastic bag or a napkin should only be a last resort.
It can be helpful to rinse your retainer each time you take it out. This can help to clear away any plaque and food particles. You should also soak it each night in a mixture of half cold water and half antiseptic mouthwash. If you notice some plaque buildup, you can gently brush the unit with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a little non-abrasive toothpaste. Try not to use abrasive toothpaste as it could dull the plastic material.
